ARCHAEOLOGY EDUCATION

The Ohio State University Excavations at Isthmia maintains a commitment to the education and field study of Classical Archaeology, and these materials have been developed to directly address that committment. This site is provides students with a broad introduction to the theory and practice of classical archaeology, with examples and specific information drawn from the Ohio State University Excavations at Isthmia and the other OSU Archaeological Projects in Greece. You are encouraged to explore this site, from beginning to end, or in whatever order you like. The individual pages normally begin with general considerations and then proceed to examples drawn from Isthmia and the Korinthia.

Classical Archaeology: A general and broad introduction to the study of classical archaeology.

The Greek Environs: A closer look at the environment of Greece and the Korinthia. This section specifically concerns the climate and geography of the area.

Greek Mythology: A broad synopsis of the Greek Pantheon and its gods and heroes.

Myth at Isthmia: A specific exploration of the myth surrounding the Panhellenic site at Isthmia, and the Isthmian games devoted to Poseidon and Palaimon.

The History of Isthmia: A consideration of the literary and archaeological history of the site.

Fieldwork at Isthmia: Descriptions of current projects and fieldwork, as well as a general discussion of what questions we can attempt to answer through archaeological means.

Survey: An exploration of survey work, including past and present work in and near Isthmia.

Excavation: A discussion of excavation methods and techniques, this section also describes the recent work conducted at the site.

Analysis: An effort to examine and describe the results of fieldwork that lead to the eventual understanding of archaeological inquiry.

Review: A comprehensive review of the previous sections.
