Fieldwork
Opportunities for 2003
A very limited number of positions are available
for volunteers who wish to work with us at Isthmia during the
spring/summer of
2003. Preference for this program is given to university
students with a serious interest in classical archaeology, but
there may be a few places for others. We should stress that
this volunteer program is neither a credit-granting class nor an
opportunity for a vacation in the Mediterranean. It is a
volunteer program in which participants should expect to spend
5 days a week working on excavation projects. These projects
range from filing and computer-based work to active physical activity
such as movement of soil with wheelbarrows and cutting weeds; much
work takes place outdoors in the hot summer sun and volunteers
must be in excellent physical condition.
Unfortunately, there are no funds available to
support volunteers and all participants must arrange their own
airfare and transportation
to Ancient Korinth as well as covering their room and board there. All
participants must stay at Rooms Marinos in Ancient Korinth (see
information on the hotel, link above) and the cost is $320 per
week for room (double occupancy) and full board (all meals except
for lunch on Saturday and Sunday and dinner on Saturday).
The ordinary work schedule is from 7.30AM to 1:00PM,
with a break for lunch and beach from 1:00PM to 3:30PM, and a
second work session
from 3:30 to 6:30PM. Dinner is at 9:00PM.
The 2003 Isthmia Field Season will run from May
18 to June 30 (six weeks). Participants must be prepared
to sign up for one or both of these sessions:
- May 18 to 31 (two weeks) and/or
- June 1 to 28 (four weeks)
Unfortunately it is not possible to accommodate volunteers who
wish to come for shorter periods.
For application materials and further information, please contact
Timothy E. Gregory as
soon as possible. Places
are limited and arrangements need to be made soon.
