EAST FIELD TRENCH 70-1 is 3x20m, oriented N-S. 9 workmen, Charlene Bleistein, Ruth Gais.

Work started at 7:30. Christos was foreman. The men began to clear the surface grass.

An unfluted column drum whose top was visible above the surface was measured. Its dimensions were as follows:

BASKET #3 contains sherds from third stroma, over entire trench. Still surface fill. 50.29-50.14. (No soil change.) Lotted and characteristic specimens saved (c. 1/3).

Tops of walls appear A,B:29-35 at level 50.27, and at grid E,F:30-32 at level 50.04m. Rubble construction.

BASKET #4 contains sherds from the fourth stroma, entire trench. 50.14-50.04. (No soil change.) See TRENCH 70-1 plan

IPL 70-1, IPL 70-2, IPL 70-3, IPL 70-8, IPL 70-9. Pottery lotted and characteristic samples saved (40%).

Marble tiles from the south end are being kept separately. The marble pieces seem to be of approximately the same thickness. One of the pieces had a rounded edge. Two pieces had level changes on the surface, although the pieces were not of the same thickness.

Pottery lotted and characteristic samples saved (1/2)

All five baskets have been from surface fill, which is a moderately reddish earth containing a great many tile fragments (terra-cotta).

A mound of slightly more gray earth was left intact for the time being. Its dimensions were 1.60m by 70m, A:10-13. Top level, 49.62m.

A layer of lighter, drier earth was exposed at EF:24-26 at approximately 30cm below the surface.
