Notebook 14: 27 June 1994

Work commenced on Trench 94-1 this morning. This trench will consist of the cleaning of the W escarpment of the former EF 70-1, excavated by Charlene Bleistein and Ruth Gais (see East Field CB-RG I 1970, pp.26-29). EF 70-1 was located in the SW corner of the entire excavation area of the East Field and included in a long stretch of ashlar masonry which is taken to represent the retaining wall for the north margin of the stadium. Most of EF 70-1 was S of the retaining wall. The cleaning of the W scarp of this former trench will extend from the N face of the rubble feature in the S portion of the trench to beyond the rubble feature in the N portion of the trench, a total distance of 15.25m. See the top plan for the location of 94-1 in EF 70-1. A portion 94-1, it should be noted, will extend beyond the N limit of EF 70-1 and into EF 71-XVI-4. The objective of this cleaning is to clarify the stratigraphic sequence in this region of the East Field.

Because no fieldwork has been conducted in this area since the conclusion of the UCLA excavations here in 1972, the first task was to position benchmarks in the vicinity. Using the points in the E sanctuary proper as points of reference, two pins (94-1 and 94-2) were set on 24 June and one was set today. For the trigonometric calculations and more on these benchmarks, see NB.
Today their elevations were determined:

94-148.448m.
94-247.360m.
94-350.223m.

(scale 1:200)

Point 94-3 (50.223) will be the most useful for cleaning Trench 94-1, and its location is indicated on the top plan on p.6, the locations of Points 94-1 and 94-2 are indicated on the top plan in NB

Next we cleared the weeds which had accumulated above and below the W scarp of EB 70-1. At the same time we cleared the loose material-both scarp collapse and spill from above-from around the base of the scarp. We located our spoil heap on a mound ca. 8m. directly to the W of the scarp which appears to be a dump from the UCLA excavations. This mound is stable and could be readily removed by mechanical means through the adjacent gate.

Finally, we shot the opening elevations for Trench 94-1. We had decided to cut back the scarp ca. 10 cm. For the total extent of 15.72m.; elevations were shot at five meter intervals moving N from the southernmost point in Trench 94-1.

Because of the lighting late in the day, the opening photographs were postponed until the following morning (28 June 1994).

During the course of the day a stamped imbrex fragment (-wvoc) was found on the surface in the area ca. 10 m. directly N of EF 70-1 IA 94-3
