Notebook 3: 13 June, 1990

The work described in Notebook 3 is a continuation of the work begun in Notebook 1.

13 June 1990

Trench 90-3 is the area under the eastern geometric panels of the monochrome mosaic. It is directly west of the trench 90-1 and east of the presumed east wall of the Greek bath. The trench is construed to include half of this wall. It is (the trench) to go north of the monochrome mosaic in case the white mosaic is lifted later but there is no excavation there at this time. The area of the trench to be excavated now is co-terminous with the monochrome mosaic. It is ca. 7.58 m n-s; it is 2.86 m e-w on the south and 2.55 on the north.

We will leave a baulk of 0.50 m along n and s, continuing the line of excavation in trench 90-1.

By the end of the day, all of the mortar was removed. There were not as many cracks as there were in trench 90-1 however. Those that were found are on the above drawing. Basket 1 was closed with the removal of the 2nd layer of mortar bedding.
