HISTORY 306
MID-TERM EXAM
Note that this is the real Mid-Term
Examination. If you--for some reason, want to see the sample again,
you will find it at ... mid_term_sample.htm)
The Mid-Term Examination must be submitted no later than Friday,
February 2, at 9:30AM (Eastern Standard Time).
I will be sending each of you this same exam as an e-mail message that
will be available on the WebCT site. The easiest thing for you to do
is to go to that site, get your copy of the exam, do the exam, and then
return it to me. PLEASE do not mail or fax the examination to me,
and it is far easier for me if you use the WebCT mail system.
You may write the examination anywhere you like, although you should
time yourself and take no more than 48 minutes to write your
answers. You may use you notes and books to help you, if you like
(i.e., the examination is "open book). You should make
use of all the information available to you in the course -- the online
material (including the OSU Classical Archaeology site) and the readings
-- to help you answer the questions. There is no need to cite
sources or show where you get your information: just answer the
questions as they are asked. Be full enough to answer the
questions as they are asked, but do not "pad" your answers.
Remember that you should do this work yourself and not cheat by
having others do it for you.
Part A. Short Questions (40%). Answer the following
questions. You should be able to answer most of these in a few
words; you do not need to write whole sentences. Please keep your
answers brief and to the point.

Part B. Short Essay (20%). Write a short essay on ONE
of the following questions. You should probably write for about 10
minutes--1/2 to 1 page typed.
1. Discuss the short article by W.H Hale.
Why do you think it was included at the beginning of this
course? Briefly discuss one or two of the ideas you derive from
the piece.
2. Consider what you read on the OSU Classical
Archaeology website (http://isthmia.ohio-state.edu/arched) -- either
about geography OR about mythology. How does the information on
this topic contribute to our understanding of classical archaeology?
Part C. Essay (40%). Write an essay on ONE of the following
questions. Be sure to explain yourself and provide evidence to
demonstrate your answer. Support your generalizations with specific
evidence. You should probably write for about 20
minutes--perhaps 1-2 pages typewritten: do not include everything
you can find or think of, but be selective and come up with the best and
most important information, from the online material and the reading.
1. Imagine that you were going to carry out an
excavation somewhere in the Mediterranean world. What things
would you consider and plan before you began work and what would be
some of the considerations you would keep in mind as you carried out
the excavation? Be sure you bring in some of the information
from the book by Kevin Greene, Archaeology. An Introduction.
2. Discuss the relationship between archaeology
and the development of "science" in the 19th
century.
