Internet Reports:

February 11 and 25

Read the directions carefully and follow them precisely.  Make sure you understand what you need to do in order to get a good grade.

In order to do a good job on this assignment, you may want to look at one or more of the following resources (the following are not required):

a.)    net.TUTOR at the OSU library (http://gateway.lib.ohio-state.edu/tutor/index.html).  Especially appropriate are two of the advanced lessons (including the quizzes): “Smart Net Research Strategies” and “Evaluation Of Web Sites.”

b.)  http://www.ala.org/acrl/undwebev.html   Another site to help you evaluate web sites.

 The following assignments are required:

Internet Reports: You are to visit the combined St. Cloud State University OSU website (http://eleftheria.stcloudstate.edu/westciv/).  There you will find a list of websites that deal with different places and different archaeological projects.  You should visit two of the web sites listed there, and post reports or comments on each of those sites, according to the following schedule..

The first report is due by midnight, February 11 (that is, by 11.59PM on Sunday, February 11.

The second report is due by midnight, February 25 (that is, by 11.59PM on Sunday, February 25.

These reports are to be brief--one to two paragraphs. For each report you must select a website, explore it, and write a comment or reaction and post it automatically to the SCSU-OSU discussion page where it will be read by others. You should indicate your reaction to the web site, whether it was good or not, what you learned, and questions you might have. Discussion with what other students must form part of what you say and the best reports are those that respond clearly to points raised by other students.  Reports should be written in clear, proper prose, and not be full of slang or improper language.  Please be polite (although you may certainly disagree with what others have written) and say something that will demonstrate that you actually looked at the site and that you have something intelligent to say about it.

Reports will be evaluated on three points:

  1.      Did you carefully read the material and attempt to understand it?

  2.      Did you craft a reasonable and clear comment about the site?

  3.      Did your report respond to the basic questions asked and points made by others?

Also, notice that it is your responsibility to make sure your report has been filed on the Internet.  Check and double check—this is part of the assignment.  If your report is not there by the due date, you will receive an E for that report.  No exceptions, even if the server is down or the dog ate your computer.  Good advice is to get the assignment posted well ahead of the deadline!

Your grade will appear on the website, but will be visible only to you.

It is always a good idea to keep a copy of your report for your records (i.e., save it as a word-processing document).  If for some reason the SCSU web server goes down or the website does not work when you try to submit your report, try again later.  In the event that the server is down the day or two before the report is due, hold on to your report and I'll give you alternative way to submit it.  If the server is working, however (and I'll know!), you must submit your report on the website.

See a sample of what an "A" report might look like.
