Mid-Term Examination


The Mid-Term Examination will be held on Tuesday, November 2 at the regular class time.   You will have up to an hour to take the exam (i.e., 9:30 to 10:30).

The following is designed as a sample to show you what to expect in the examination.  The arrangement and kinds of questions shown here are those that will be on the examination, but the precise questions will presumably be different.   You will write your answers directly on the examination itself.

Part A. Short Questions (30%).  Answer each of the following six questions with a few words or a sentence. (Remember that these are samples.)

1. Describe the exterior and interior of a stoa.

2. What was the main material used in the contruction of ordinary houses in ancient cities?

3. How does the Epic of Gilgamesh describe the walls of Uruk?

4. What was a temenos?

5. Why did aristocracts decide to build temples in the early Greek polis?

6. What connection can you see between the development of democracy in Athens and the Periklean building program?

Part B. Map (20%). Identify the following 5 places on the map below.

  1. Olynthos   
  2. Pergamon
  3. Nippur
  4. Ur
  5. Luxor

Part C. Plans (20%).  Identify the following 4 elements on the plans below.

  1. peristyle court
  2. pastas
  3. megaron
  4. temple

Part D. Essay (30%).  Answer ONE of the following questions with a well-organized essay. Make sure you explain your answer and present evidence that supports your answer.

1. Explain why you think the Greeks developed orthogonal planning and applied it to many of their cities?

2. Of the cities we have studied so far in this course, which do you think had the best living conditions?  Explain.
