School Outreach Program 2007

Welcome to the OSU Excavations at Isthmia School Outreach Program.

We are now organizing our collaboration with schools for the 2006-2007 school year (with preparations possible for 2007-08). We invite participation from schools we have worked with in the past and a limited number of new school partners.

Picture of Roman Bath - Welcome!

We would like to spend the winter with basic preparation, listening to what schools want to do, orienting students, and laying the foundations for projects that will be carried out in the spring.  We are working on a program to involve your students in the actual work of excavation at Isthmia this spring!!  If you are interested in this possibility, contact us at gregory.4@osu.edu.

Our goal is to work with schools and individual teachers. Archaeology is exciting and interesting for students and it can be used to illustrate and teach about a wide variety of subjects--from history and language, to math, science, geography, and politics. We do not want to train students in archaeology, but to utilize archaeology to help students experience and learn about the world around them. The program is aimed generally at a middle-school audience, but--since individual teachers will make specific assignments and set problems and exercises--the material can easily be used for either younger or older students.

In March and April we will present a series of reports and information, based on our work in Greece. Individual teachers will then be free to assign and/or use that information, either in their regular classroom teaching or as individual or optional projects for students.

What we ask from you now is an indication of the kinds of things you would like to see in this project. We will do our best to accommodate your wishes, and we will always be happy to respond to student questions and inquiries. We will keep in continuous e-mail contact with students and we will seek to develop audio and perhaps video communication. At very least we hope we can include video clips in our regular presentations. All we ask from teachers is feedback, suggestions for improvement, and an evaluation of the project at the end.

We still welcome new partner schools. To communicate with us and "register" as one of our participating schools for 2006/07 send a message to the Director of the Ohio State University Excavations at Isthmia, Timothy E. Gregory: gregory.4@osu.edu
