Classical Archaeology In Education

A Summer Workshop for Teachers
History 791 (3 graduate credit hours)
June 14–18, 2004 at The Ohio State University

Sponsored by The Ohio State University Archaeological Programs in Greece and the Department of History

History 791 examines the role that classical archaeology plays in elucidating the worlds of ancient Greece and Rome.  Through classroom instruction, guest speakers, field trips, videos, and daily communication with OSU archaeologists in Greece, teachers will learn how to make classical archaeology come alive in their classrooms.  Individual workshops will focus on art, music and drama, ancient sport, coins and inscriptions, and food and culture.  Teachers will work with artifacts in the collections of the Museum of Classical Archaeology for a hands-on experience with ancient material.   Staff will provide ideas for reading and school projects that can enhance the learning experience for students, especially through the Internet.  This course is not only intended for teachers of Social Studies and History—those who teach Art, Drama, or Ancient Greek and Latin will also benefit from the multi-disciplinary approach and individualized instruction.

Schedule: The course will meet for one week for thirty-five contact hours: from 8:30-11:30 A.M. and from 12:30-4:30 P.M. Monday through Friday.  If there is enough interest, a Roman banquet will conclude the program on Friday evening.

Requirements: A basic textbook and coursepack of readings will be assigned.  A syllabus will be sent to students who enroll in advance of the first meeting.  Each teacher will also be expected to prepare a teaching unit on some aspect of the ancient world for use in the classroom.   Teachers will also be asked to conduct follow-up evaluations as they incorporate new teaching methodologies in their classrooms during the school year.  The course will be graded as follows:  50% written project, 25% daily assignments from staff archaeologists in Greece, and 25% class participation.

Faculty: Professor Timothy Gregory, Department of History & Director of OSU Archaeological Projects in Greece will direct the workshop from Greece with the assistance of staff members.
Ms. Monica Fullerton, Assistant to the Director, OSU Archaeological Projects in Greece will conduct the workshop on the Columbus campus.  There will be daily guest speakers who will lecture and assist teachers with their individual projects.

Program Fee: $575.00 (Check with your local school district for financial aid opportunities).
